East Bengal and Mohun Bagan played out an entertaining 1–1 draw in a closely contested Kolkata Derby in the Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Division on Monday.

Despite fielding a reserve side, East Bengal showed tremendous character and competed on equal terms against a strong Mohun Bagan lineup featuring several first-team players. The intensity and competitive nature of the derby was evident from the opening whistle, with both teams battling hard for control in midfield.

Mohun Bagan broke the deadlock in the 39th minute. Manvir Singh finished the move to put the Mariners ahead, with East Bengal goalkeeper Gourab Shaw’s positioning contributing to the goal. East Bengal went into the half-time break trailing 0–1 but remained firmly in the contest.

The second half saw East Bengal step up the pressure in search of an equaliser. The Red & Gold brigade came agonisingly close on two occasions but failed to convert two open-goal opportunities, keeping Mohun Bagan in front.

However, East Bengal’s persistence finally paid off in the 64th minute. Substitute Mohammad Bilal rose highest inside the box and produced a well-placed header from a corner to restore parity. The goal sparked renewed energy in the East Bengal camp as both sides pushed for a winning goal.

Neither team could find the decisive breakthrough in the remaining minutes, and the derby eventually ended 1–1.

The result was a valuable one for East Bengal, who remain unbeaten and at the top of Group 1. Importantly, both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan had already secured their places in the Super Six stage of the 2026–27 CFL, making the derby an important opportunity for both teams to test themselves ahead of the next phase.

For East Bengal, the performance was particularly encouraging, with the reserve team matching a star-studded Mohun Bagan side and demonstrating considerable resilience, fighting spirit and depth.
