Mohun Bagan Super Giant ended a 22-year drought for the prestigious IFA Shield, securing their 21st title in dramatic fashion by defeating arch-rivals East Bengal FC 5–4 in a penalty shootout after a hard-fought 1–1 draw at the end of extra time. The victory was sealed by the heroics of goalkeeper Vishal Kaith and a perfect sequence of five penalties from the Mohun Bagan side.

Match Summary:

The 125th edition of the Kolkata Derby final was a high-octane affair, living up to its billing as both teams fought for one of Indian football’s oldest trophies.

First Half Drama:
The first half was a whirlwind of action and missed opportunities. Mohun Bagan started brightly, but a crucial moment arrived in the 34th minute when they were awarded a penalty following a foul on Jamie Maclaren. However, Australian striker Jason Cummings shockingly sent his spot-kick high over the crossbar, squandering a golden chance to take the lead.East Bengal capitalised immediately on the momentum shift. Just two minutes later, in the 36th minute, Moroccan forward Hamid Ahadad gave the Red and Gold Brigade the lead, tapping in a low cross from Naorem Mahesh Singh. Ahadad almost doubled the advantage before the break, hitting the post and missing another close-range effort, allowing Mohun Bagan a lifeline.Mohun Bagan found their equaliser just on the stroke of half-time. In the 45+3rd minute, midfielder Lalengmawia Ralte (Apuia) unleashed a stunning left-footed strike from the edge of the box. The ball found the back of the net, drawing the score level at 1–1 and setting up a tense second half.

Second Half and Extra Time: Despite the stalemate, the second 45 minutes saw a continued push for a winner, with both goalkeepers making vital saves. East Bengal substitute Hiroshi Ibusuki forced a brilliant save from Mohun Bagan keeper Vishal Kaith shortly after coming on. Mohun Bagan also pressed, with East Bengal custodian Prabhsukhan Gill pulling off a fingertip save from Mehtab Singh’s header deep into second-half stoppage time, ensuring the game went into extra time.Despite end-to-end play in the additional 30 minutes, neither side could break the deadlock.

East Bengal coach Oscar Bruzón made the calculated decision to substitute his starting goalkeeper, Prabhsukhan Gill (who had played well in the match), with veteran Debjit Majumder, a specialist brought in purely for the penalty shootout but because of Kaith’s save on Jay Gupta, and with all five Mohun Bagan takers converting their shots, Mohun Bagan SG won the penalty shootout 5-4 to lift the IFA Shield trophy.
