Venue: Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium), Kolkata
Competition: 135th IndianOil Durand Cup – Group A
The 135th edition of the IndianOil Durand Cup began with a thrilling Kolkata Derby as Mohun Bagan Super Giant edged past arch-rivals East Bengal FC with a hard-fought 1–0 victory in front of a passionate crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium.
The opening fixture of Asia’s oldest football tournament lived up to its billing, with both sides displaying intensity, commitment, and determination from the opening whistle. Despite several chances at both ends, the deadlock remained unbroken for much of the contest as both defences stood firm.
The decisive moment arrived in the second half when Sahal Abdul Samad found the breakthrough with a composed finish, giving Mohun Bagan the lead. The goal ultimately proved to be the difference as the Mariners successfully defended their advantage until the final whistle.
East Bengal responded positively after conceding, increasing the attacking tempo and creating pressure in the closing stages. However, Mohun Bagan’s disciplined defensive organisation and goalkeeper’s composure ensured that the Red and Gold Brigade could not find an equaliser.
The victory gives Mohun Bagan Super Giant an ideal start to their Group A campaign, while East Bengal will look to regroup and bounce back in their remaining group-stage fixtures.
